Vu sur Reddit: The Baliscissors

8 juillet 2021 0 Par

For those who don’t know about this project, I think that it is fantastic and wanted to share.

This creator, Contraption Collection, got me into balisongs from the product design or machine porn side of YouTube, at a time when I was binging videos from This Old Tony, and Contraption Collection was recomended with the « This Old Tony viewers also watch… ».

Contraption Collection is making, as he calls them, Baliscissors. These Baliscissors, a combination of two things that I find fascinating, are unique. They use the balisong pivoting handle system, and instead of having one blade, uses two… as scissors. A button on the pivots is used to toggle the mode from flipping as a balisong to using as scissors. They seem to be thoughtfully designed, with different materials, customization options, and more being kept in mind throughout the process of their design and prototyping. He even has talked about materials from aluminum to titanium, but titanium seems like it will be the base model.

He is making something that, as I said previously, are unique. I would place the Baliscissors as similar to balisong bottle openers. They are a novel approach to the flipability of a balisong, just like those bottle openers, but there is a key difference where this truly shines. Baliscissors utility as scissors makes them more versatile of a tool than bottle openers, while hopefully remaining legal in places where live blades are illegal, like Canada and some states. They also maintain the best part of balisongs in my opinion, that they flip. The flipability makes the scissors a usable tool that makes sense to carry scissors are useful tools, and the compact form factor combined with them being one handed is fantastic. The carrying a useful tool that isn’t a bottle opener is probably the part I’m most excited. On a multitool, one either needs to sacrifice one of the outer tool spaces for scissors, or pry them open to access them, meanwhile the scissors are small, and tend to be thin. These scissors are big and I’m at least not afraid of them breaking when I look at them *funny*.

Speaking of breaking, there are some concerns I have. I’m trying, and by the way I should note that this effort is completely futile, to not overhype myself on this, and to not sell you on something that isn’t great. Some known concerns that could be problematic are that the Baliscissors use tight tolerances on moving parts, and they are not perfect circles. They are almost made to attract dust, grit, and grime, which will hasten the wear and tear, but I’m not experienced with how titanium wears, so take what I say with a grain of salt. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will comment on this. Supposedly some people have been testing the easier designs, but I don’t know who, or how those tests have gone. As a result of the Baliscissors constantly being revised, how well this will hold up to being dropped, or how well it will hold up at all from extended flipping is completely unknown. It is being made of titanium, and a lot of effort is going into making these as robust as they can be, but again, nothing is really known until some reviewers have had there hands on them. This concern is the perfect transition to the replacement of worn parts being another potential issue. The pins on this secure the blades and scales in place when necessary, and the cuts in the scales, pins, and blades will all contribute to the wear of the parts and progressively poorer tolerances. They balicissors as we know them use almost 100% custom parts, from the washer to the aforementioned scales and pins. Replacement of them will either be through the OEM, Contraption Collection, will come from reverse engineered parts(which I doubt will be as fantastic as the OEM parts), or could come from the part files being purchasable if and or when the replacement parts are discontinued. As a result of the potential for increased wear, this might not be the daily flipper that gets beaten up, but I don’t know, it very well could be if replacement parts are made available, and I intend to EDC it. The last point I want to mention is the weight. It hasn’t been mentioned lately as far as I remember, but very well could be heavier than your average balisong, so they might be more tiring to flip. It looks like a lot of thought has gone into the scales weight distribution, so if they are sent to reviewers, I expect that they will be quite well balanced, and even if not, I doubt they will be poorly balanced. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will comment on these potential problems.

These are really cool.

If I haven’t sold you on at least that they are cool, I recommend you at least take a look at them, and would suggest doing so either way. He demos the « old » design in the start of episode 22, and at 9:43. The new one is in the latest episode, episode 23, flipping them briefly at 6:44.
